Bio: Dr. Stephen C. Bates , President of TvU, has B.S., M.S., and Sc.D. degrees in Aeronautical and Astronautical Engineering from MIT, accumulating twice the number of credits required for a BS equally divided between engineering, physics, and mathematics. He has been a Staff Scientist at the Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) (5 yrs) working on a major national project in magnetic confinement nuclear fusion, a Senior Scientist at the General Motors Research Laboratories (6 yrs) working on internal combustion engine research, and a Senior Scientist (3 yrs) performing research in a wide variety of areas at another small business. He has 29 Journal publications, 53 other publications, 3 patents (2 sole author), and has been included in a variety of national and international Who's Who publications.

Name: Durrance; Samuel T.

Bio: One of the two scientists trained to fly as Payload Specialiests is Dr. Samuel T. Durrance. He earned a B.S. in physics from California State University at Los Angeles in 1972, an M.S. (with honors) in physics from California State University at Los Angeles in 1974, and his Ph.D. in astrogeophysics from the University of Colorado in 1980. He is a Principal Research Scientist in the Physics and Astronomy Department at the Johns Hopkins University, is a co-investigator and Assistant Project Scientist for the Hopkins Ultraviolet Telescope, and also serves as an Adjunct Associate of the Observatories of the Carnegie Institute in Washington. His astronomy research focuses on the origin and evolution of planets, both in our own solar system and around other stars, and he has directed a program to develop adaptive optics instrumentation for ground-based astronomy to search for signs of planet formation around nearby stars. Dr. Durrance served as a Payload Specialist on the Astro-1 mission.

Bio: I live in Parma, Ohio, and currently attend FIT in wild persuit of my dream to one day travel into space. As of now, I am a member of SPS/SEDS and a Girl Scout, and in the future I hope to earn a Ph.D, and possibly join the Peace Corps. The ISRU project is my first project, although during high school I was a member of the Science Olympiad team and a lab assistant at Shiloh Middle School. I enjoy napping, hanging out with friends, art and music.

Bio: Growing up in Sheboygan, WI, my love for space, the unknown, and desire to improve humanity brought me down to FL Tech. I am very excited to be involved in a project that will enhance our possibilities and promote lunar colonization. Aside from ISRU, I am also a leader in Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, a member of SEDS, and a writer for the school newspaper. I also enjoy working for the Department of Physics and Space Sciences. Some interests include music, art, literature, athletics, and the outdoors.

I plan to be very active in NASA after my graduation in December 2005.

Bio: I live in Herndon, Virginia, and I am currently attending FIT. I am very interested in robotics and hope to one day go into space to explore and understand the unknown. I was involved with NASA's robotics competition, FIRST Robotics, in high school and I hope to further my education about robotics while attending FIT. I enjoy long conversations involving the universe(space travel, exploration, colonization, etc), playing with computers, and doing hands on activities(building things). In addition to joining ISRU I hope my experience with the group will help me get a better idea of what I want to do later on involving the space field.

Bio: After countless visits and views of the night skies in Cooperstown, NY, I, someone raised in New York City and New Jersey Suburbia became inspired to study the stars. I have completed one semester at Florida Tech and earned her high school diploma at Old Bridge High School, ranking in the top 6% percent. During High School, I was an avid member of the Cooperative Satellite Learning Program, a program funded by NASA, Fortune 500 businesses, and Princeton University aimed to introduce astronomy, space sciences, and NASA to high school students. My favorite project in CSLP was monitoring Space Weather for Goddard Space Flight Center. I wanted to participate in the ISRU University Competition because it would be a fun and great opportunity to experience on learning how to create and follow through with a space mission to completion. Now I am the second leader for the FIT ISRU Public Relations subgroup.

Bio: I was born in Bogota, Colombia. I came to the U.S.A when I was three years old. As a Latin American I am privileged to have integrated both Latin and American culture. As a student I have accomplished many of my goals, among them, was the opportunity to attend Florida Institute of Technology. I am now fully devoted to learning and participating in research. ISRU has been a milestone in my success, for I have learned to integrate many fields of knowledge to develop technology that may be utilized for future space exploration. I hope to continue developing this project, and I will devote all my energy for its success.

Bio: I recieved my start in higher edjucation at Pensacola High School in the International Baccalaureate program. After recieving my diploma, I have studied Computer Engineering and Applied Mathematics at Florida Institute of Technology. Eventually I would like to work in CPU design however that is many years down the road. My main contribution to the ISRU project is in fabricating the arm and programming it. I enjoy developing software systems, watching Star Trek, and maintaining computers.
